Background
On January 1, 2012, AB 1136, The Hospital Patient and Health Care Worker Injury Protection Act (Act) became effective in California. The Act, which has been incorporated into the California Labor Code as Section 6403.5, requires that general acute care hospitals1 adopt a “patient protection and health care worker back and musculoskeletal injury prevention plan” as part of the employer’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).2 The Act requires covered hospitals to adopt a safe patient handling policy for all units, which includes trained lift teams or other trained support staff, as well as the appropriate3 use of powered lift and transfer equipment to replace manual lifting and transferring. It also requires training for health care workers on the appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, the five areas of body exposure, and the use of lifting devices to handle patients safely. The registered nurse, as the coordinator of care, must observe and direct patient lifts and mobilization, and participate as needed in patient handling.

Position

We currently have an exceptional opportunity for a Director of Site Acquisition and Construction based at our corporate office in San Jose, CA. In this role, you will be responsible for leading SHC’s construction projects from inception though move-in. In addition, you will manage a variety of assignments to carry out the establishment of new healthcare delivery sites, as well as periodic renovation and maintenance of existing sites. This work will encompass scouting for site locations, negotiating lease terms, preparing and evaluating third-party construction bids and managing multiple construction projects through completion. This position oversees a staff of two employees, but also involves extensive oversight of outside architects, lawyers, general contractors and subcontractors.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must have a Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or architecture, 5 years of professional engineering experience in the construction, remodeling and maintenance of buildings/facilities in the healthcare services industry meeting OSHPD 3 regulations and a proven track record in project completions and high customer satisfaction. Requires knowledge of construction codes, standards and regulations, negotiating construction contracts and building construction processes/procedures, as well as the ability to analyze and manage costs of construction projects, evaluate and hire contractors/consultants and communicate effectively with others.

Job Description

Hospitals and healthcare facilities have complex infrastructure systems (HVAC, standard and emergency electrical power, medical gases etc.) that must remain in service 24/7. A large portion of every facility’s construction budget is dedicated to infrastructure upgrade and repair. c|a ARCHITECTS has developed an Infrastructure Studio dedicated to this project type. We are looking for a project manager with experience in infrastructure projects that is interested in focusing on this project type exclusively. Prospective project manager candidates should have 5 years experience of training or education in the design, planning, documentation and construction of infrastructure projects with the ability to coordinate and administer a major project and several smaller projects through all phases of development. Supervision received is mainly administrative, with assignments based on broad, general objectives and limits. Oversee design development and production of working drawings and construction documents on given projects.

Job Requirements

Good interpersonal skills to work directly with clients and ability to manage project budgets, schedules and production, coordinate consultants and agency requirements, and develop technical plans. Must have excellent writing, computer & communication skills with the ability to lead a team, establish budgets and prepare schedules. AutoCAD skills required. Bachelor degree or equivalent experience. Licensed architect or engineer with a minimum of 7 years knowledge and experience as a project manager. Knowledge of OSHPD required.
